Happy Chappy, Bali

The Place

There’s more to a book than its cover. And Happy Chappy in Bali is a perfect example.

I’d walked past this place a few times (it’s around the corner from where I was staying at the One Eleven Hotel) and I didn’t get the best vibe. The logo, the name, the sign for the Dragon Den Bar gave me the impression of some dodge sports bar venue. Not quite my cup of tea.

But every time I walked past, I also noticed that the place was buzzing. There were lots of people coming and going. My curiosity got the better of me. And I am so glad that it did.

Happy Chappy is a Chinese restaurant with trad-mod décor and some of the best Chinese food I’ve ever tasted. So look beyond its slightly shabby façade and dive right in.

The Neighbourhood

In Seminyak. A short walk from Sisterfields (great for brunch) and Mama San (my go-to for tasty South East Asian flavours).

A Good Shout for…

Treating your taste buds to something a little different if you’ve overloaded on Indonesian flavours.

The Best Bits

  • Being pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. It was incredibly clean and fresh. Possibly some of the best Chinese food I’ve ever had. A massive statement, I know. Especially from someone who’s lived within a stomping distance of San Fran’s Chinatown. But it really was that good.
  • A menu full of Chinese classics. Dumplings. Bao buns. Dim sum. Noodles. And a range of Chinese and Malaysian beers.
  • The prices here are good. They’re almost – dare I say it – cheap. But if you’re planning on a low-cost lunch or dinner, just watch your drinks. There’s a hefty tax on alcohol in Bali so you can easily end up paying more for you booze than for your food.
  • And of course, they have a delivery service which means you can enjoy your meal around your swimming pool as I did. 🙂
