In the 18th Century, Budapest was dubbed ‘the Paris of the East’. And with good reason. It was inhabited by all types of creatives; poets, writers and inventors would all gather there, and still do today.
Who wouldn’t be inspired by this city, with its beautiful architecture and incredible history? It’s enough to break through any creative block and it’s the ultimate backdrop of any photo shoot.
However, I must admit, it can be a little challenging when trying to find the perfect place to lay your head at night, so I’ve compiled a list of some of what are, in my opinion, the best hotels in Budapest.
This new hotel, which was launched in early 2017, has already made quite a name for itself. It possesses modern, cosy rooms – each which its own colour scheme and décor – with comfortable beds and incredible bathrooms. The whole place is impeccably stylish, including the famed TOPRUM Sky&Bar on the 7th floor. There, up in the clouds, you can not only treat yourself to a divine dinner overlooking Budapest but also your included breakfast – you’ll feel on top of the world. I also couldn’t fault the staff – they were lovely and attentive.
The location is ideal too; close to most attractions, walking distance from the Danube River as well as the famous Budapest Vaci street shops, bars and restaurants. If you fancy going further out, you’re also close to the metro, buses and trams – perfect for the “modern urban explorer”.

Even if you don’t have a chance to stay overnight, you must visit the New York Palace at least once, even if just for dinner, to be in awe of the palatial beauty and magnificent architecture of hotel’s New York Café. It was built in 1892-94, as an awe-inspiring art nouveau masterpiece, and beautifully restored to that original splendour in 2006. I have stayed here many times and will definitely be returning in the future. Honestly – it’s an absolute luxury.
The rooms were superb – spacious and tidy – and the staff were second to none. But, the highlight of the hotel was definitely the grand lobby and what is most likely one of the most stunning cafes in Europe, although it’s almost impossible to get a table. However, if you stay in the hotel, your breakfast is included and you get to enjoy it there! The hotel is also situated in the heart of the city, right on the main “ring road” (Kör út) and has metro and tram links close by.

The sister building of the New York Palace Hotel, New York Residence, is situated right behind it. I’ve stayed here more than any other hotel in Budapest because, as a Hungarian, it feels a little strange staying in a hotel room in your own hometown! This place offers self-contained apartments and is easier on your wallet, giving you a lot more for your money. Some of the apartments are two-stories with a living room and a kitchen/dining area, which is great because you can even cook if you want to host a dinner in your room. They are extremely spacious and luxurious, and some even have terraces offering panoramic views of the city.
In addition, you also get the usual facilities of a hotel such as 24h reception, room service, daily clean etc. This place is ideal for anyone who is staying in Budapest for a long amount of time and feels they need a bit more space. You can opt for the full New York package, where you can enjoy the aforementioned delightful breakfast in the New York Café, as well as access to their spa and fitness centre. Just like the New York Palace Hotel, New York Residence is pretty central and close to lots of transports links.

Gerloczy Rooms de Lux is a little gem hidden in the midst of central Budapest. It’s small, but decadent with outstanding, helpful service and is full of charm. The rooms are lovely –spacious and clean with classical furniture – and they have a wonderful outdoor area where you can enjoy a drink at dusk. For breakfast, you can enjoy the hotel’s offerings or you can head to the little ‘micro-bakery’ Alma, which is tucked away next door on the right. I’ve never had baked goods as moreish as theirs.
The hotel is very close to the Jewish Quarter, which is now not only known for its history and architecture but also as the most “happening” area in Budapest. If you choose to stay at Gerloczy, you can visit the Dohany Street Synagogue – the biggest synagogue in Europe, the second biggest in the world in fact, which is just five minutes’ walk away. The Hungarian National museum and various other cultural heritage sites are also a short walk away. There are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby too – try out Konyha if you’re feeling peckish.

The Four Seasons Hotel is easily the most amazing (and the most expensive) hotel in Budapest – it’s literally a converted palace if you can believe it. This fabulous hotel has been graced by an endless list of Hollywood royalty and big names in the music industry such as Depeche Mode, Madonna, Robbie Williams, just to name a few. In fact, Will Smith recently stayed here and one morning the madman decided to climb the Chain Bridge in front! I would strongly advise you not to follow his antics…
The place itself is an architectural neo-classical beauty which has been impeccably restored since its conception in the early 19th Century. I feel like I don’t have to say much more – it’s a Four Seasons, it speaks for itself! Impeccable hospitality, stunning, modern rooms and, well, 5* accommodation.https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/831642/four-seasons-hotel-gresham-palace-budapest/
