The Place

Drangar is part of Hótel Kría in Vik, which was my first stop out of Reykjavik. And it was, no doubt, my favourite dining experience in Iceland and made it onto my "best restaurants in Iceland" list.

This isn’t your everyday countryside restaurant. Thekind of place that only gets custom because there’s no competition. Nope.Drangar, Vik holds its own against any of the city-slicker Reykjavik eateries Ivisited.

Five-star food, service and design make this place a must, whether you're staying at the hotel or not.

The Neighbourhood

Vik is a little seafront village, a few hours south-east of Reykjavik. I’d really recommend it as a stop if you’re driving around the island.

It sits in the shadow of the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier and, just a short walk from the centre, you'll find the famous Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach.

Back to more practical matters, there’s a supermarket and an outdoor clothing shop (if your apparel isn’t standing up to the Icelandic elements).

A Good Shout for…

An exceptional, laidback-luxe dining experience. (Drangar, Vik is only open for breakfast and dinner and you’d be advised to book ahead.)

The Best Bits

• The food. Icelandic flavours given a modern twist. Dishes were wonderfully simple, beautifully presented and beyond delicious.
  
• The design. High ceilings. Natural wood. Polished concrete. A window-wrapped dining area that looked out onto a mountainous view. And a fireplace. It was spectacular.
  
• The knowledgeable staff. Ask them anything! They gave me some great info about the food and the local area too.
