The Place

I was surprised to learn that The Barn Bio Market isn’t where the Bruxellois go to buy their washing powder. Across Europe, bio means organic. And so this market’s shelves are chock-a-block with organic, sustainable groceries and takeaway snacks.

I love places like this. Healthy drinks, fruit, veg and nibbles. A great ethos; the guys here offer refills of stuff like olive oil and cereals meaning much less packaging and waste. And the prices aren’t insane either. Which is never a given when it comes to organic produce.

The Neighbourhood

In the Etterbeek ‘hood. Right by the city’s Parc du Cinquantenaire and a little way east of Brussels centre. The Barn Bio Market was also just around the corner from Made in Louise, the hotel I stayed at on this trip.

A Good Shout for…

Stocking up the backpack with a few healthy snacks before a day stomping and photo snapping around the city.

The Best Bits

  • The design, which adds a few more points to the market’s sustainable cred. Counters and shelves are built from reclaimed wood and old pallets.
  • The chocolate selection. Don’t leave without grabbing a little sweet treat.
  • The recycled paper barrels right by the front door. They’re stocked full of healthy, organic grab ‘n’ go goodies.
