The Place

The Spice Shop is one of a kind. I’ve been buying spices here for the best part of 25 years. In fact, I was shopping here just yesterday.

Once upon a time, Birgit, the owner of The Spice Shop, had a spice stall on Portobello Road Market. It was so popular that she opened up this store in 1995 and it’s been a raging success ever since.

Her handpicked spices come from cuisines the world over. And there really isn’t another shop like this in London.

The Neighbourhood

The Spice Shop is very easy to miss. It’s on a little side street halfway up Portobello Road. You’ll need to keep an eye out for its bright yellow canopy.

The closest tube station is Ladbroke Grove. And there are plenty of other goodies nearby. Pizza East is one of my fave pizza joints in the city. And Lisboa Patisserie is the place to pick up a Portuguese custard tart.

A Good Shout for…

Spice shopping, obvs. And maybe finding a foodie gift for the chef in your life.

The Best Bits

  • Finding the spices you need for even the most authentic of recipes. Birgit stocks spices from around the world and there are products here you just can’t buy anywhere else in London.
  • Getting all your spicy questions answered. The staff here are incredibly knowledgeable. And can even give you recipe tips if you’ve not used a particular spice before.
  • Knowing you’re following in some famous footsteps. Gordon Ramsey has been known to shop at The Spice Shop. And Jamie Oliver also regularly pays his respects. Good work guys!
